The Isle is famous for its spectacular coastal landscape, refreshing sea air and feel-good activities. Being by the coast can work wonders for your mind, body and soul. Nature knows best how to blow away the cobwebs and reboot sluggish systems.

For centuries Margate has been known for sea-bathing and the benefits it brings - even the Victorians did it! It may not appeal to everybody, but a cold water sea swim is an invigorating experience. So take a deep breath and immerse yourself in this invigorating experience.

Did you know, Margate has a special place in the history of the ’Bathing Machine’ with Benjamin Beale inventing the modest hood in 1753. This canvas canopy could be lowered and raised by the driver of the machine, allowing bathers a modicum of privacy as well as some protection from wind and waves.

Experience Sea Scrub Sauna on Margate Main Sands. Enjoy the warmth of the beautiful Nordic wood fired barrel sauna, with uninterrupted views of the beach and sea before stepping outside for the cold plunge into whisky barrels (filled with ice cold water).

Alternatively discover People Care Planet Care (previously known as Haeckels) ‘Community Sauna’ at Walpole Bay. Just meters from the ever popular Walpole Bay Tidal Pool, this locally crafted bathing machine is just the thing for a cooler day at the coast.

Forgotten your swimsuit? Not a problem as Harbour and Tide in Margate, offers a rental service for just £20 for 24 hours

RNLI Advice
We’re fortunate in Thanet to have relatively calm waters, but it is crucial to always respect the water and never overestimate your abilities. Swimming in the sea is very different to swimming in a pool, and even the most confident swimmers can get caught out.

Cold water shock can steal the air from your lungs and leave you breathless in seconds. In order to best prevent it, enter the water slowly to allow yourself time to acclimatise. https://rnli.org/safety/choose-your-activity/open-water-swimming

Always make sure to let someone know you are going, wear appropriate swimwear and have warm clothing for afterwards.
