Arrangement by Carl Czerny at Holy Trinity Church in Margate
7.30pm
Mozart’s dramatic Requiem was unfinished at his death on 5th December 1891. It was completed by Franz Süssmayr in 1792.
The autograph manuscript shows the finished and orchestrated movement of the Introit in Mozart’s hand, together with detailed drafts of the ‘Kyrie’ and the sequence of ‘Dies Irae’ as far as the first eight bars of the ‘Lacrimosa’ and the ‘Offertory’.
It cannot be shown to what extent Süssmayr may have depended on now lost “scraps of paper” for the remainder, although he later claimed the ‘Sanctus and Benedictus’ and the ‘Agnus Dei’ as his own. A number of alternative completions have been produced by other composers and musicologists.
This performance will be accompanied by two piano players, using Carl Czerny’s intimate and insightful re-setting of Mozart’s orchestral accompaniment. Pianists will be Stefan Catto and Patrick Dunn, and soloists will be Nicole Ng, Ellen Griffiths, Sean Whittle-Darrock and Orlando Barton Hodges.
