The white building at the start of Broadstairs harbour has held a number of roles and names over the years: the boathouse, lifeboat station, harbour office and The Lookout.
The Highlander/Scotsman - wooden carved figurehead of a Scotsman in Highland dress stands at the side of the building looking across Viking Bay. It is said to come from the ‘Highland Chief’, an 854 ton barque that was wrecked on the Goodwin Sands off Ramsgate on 12th February 1869.
In the past there has also been the ‘Hercules’, a figurehead on the upper part of the building is said to come from a Spanish brig called Hercules that got into trouble on 16th January 1844 on the Downs (stretch of English Channel between the Kent coast and Goodwin Sands).
